Charter Tax is proud to name Penshurst Place, the stunning 14th century manor house and gardens in Penshurst, Kent, among its clients.

Penshurst Place, which was once the property of King Henry VIII, was left to his son King Edward VI and granted to Sir William Sidney in 1552. The Sidney family have now been in continuous occupation for more than 460 years and it remains a family home. For the past 20 years, it has been home to Viscount De L’Isle CVO MBE and his family.

A large part of the house and its extensive grounds are open to the public, while it can be hired for weddings and other functions, which benefit from the 14th century Baron’s Hall, Tudor banqueting rooms and 11 acres of Elizabethan gardens. The Penshurst Place Estate also owns many residential properties in the village of Penshurst, while the house and grounds have been featured as a film location over the years, making an appearance in Wolf Hall, The Other Boleyn Girl and Anne of a Thousand Days.

Penshurst Place has been a client since June 2018 and was drawn to Charter Tax because of a previous working relationship with team members Nicola King and Charlie Goss. Since becoming a client of Charter Tax there have been an interesting number of projects to deal with and  Janet Pierce, Principal at Charter Tax, has been heavily involved in helping the client with planning for the future.

Charter Tax provides accounts preparation, tax return completion, VAT and book-keeping assistance and Sage advisory services to Penshurst Place, and deals with all the accounting and tax requirements for the family.

“Working alongside the family’s bankers and legal advisers, we have overcome challenges such as future proofing the partnership,” says Janet. “We have also assisted Penshurst Place on a number of specific projects, which are designed to improve the profitability and efficiency of the various enterprises undertaken on the Estate.”
