Three team members from Charter Tax have recently passed their final exams to become ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) Chartered Accountants. Joe Cleary, Michael O’Brien and Sam Wing have all passed a series of rigorous examinations in financial management, auditing, business strategy and taxation, which has seen them admitted to the membership of the ICAEW and able to use the letters ACA after their names.
Joe Cleary has been with Charter Tax since October 2012, joining after completing his A levels. He works mainly in the corporate team, where he reviews and prepares VAT returns, as well as getting involved in the preparation of management accounts and statutory year-end accounts, the preparation of corporation tax returns, bookkeeping reviews and project work.
“I always wanted to work within business and, although I did consider going to University, I decided that route wasn’t for me,” says Joe. “I then came across accountancy and, after further research, I discovered that it was common in the industry to learn and work at the same time, which was perfect for me. I enjoy completing project work, as it often requires a lot of analysis and I feel a great sense of achievement when the file is signed off.”
Michael O’Brien has been with Charter Tax since September 2012, joining straight after leaving school. He works within the corporate team but has some cross-over with the private client team. His role involves dealing with a variety of clients, from corporates to owner-managed businesses, preparing VAT returns, year-end financial statements and tax returns, as well as day-to-day bookkeeping and other financial project work.
“I was fairly open to a future career straight out of school but had no real idea what I wanted to do,” says Michael. “I whittled it down to a few different jobs that had a particular trade – including accountancy, marketing and plumbing – and after a few different interviews, I decided to pursue the accountancy role that Charter Tax offered.”
He adds: “I enjoy the day-to-day interaction with clients, as this allows me to build new relationships, as well as improve existing ones. Given the variety of industries our clients are in, it provides plenty of exposure to each sector and, with the constant changes, it definitely keeps you on your toes.”
Sam Wing joined Charter Tax in February 2016, having completed his AAT qualification as part of an apprenticeship with another local accountancy, followed by 18 months travelling throughout Asia and Australia. He also works as part of the corporate team at Charter Tax and has a portfolio of limited companies that he looks after, providing accounts, corporate tax return preparation, VAT returns and outsourced FD (financial director) services.
“My favourite part of the job is providing a good customer service for our clients and building up a good rapport with them too,” says Sam. “At Charter Tax we have a very close-knit team, which creates a good atmosphere to work in.”
Throughout the months of study, Client Manager, Charlie Goss, has been on hand to support and mentor the three newly qualified accountants. She has been with Charter Tax since February 2016, having qualified as a Chartered Accountant herself in 2012. She also works within the firm’s corporate team.
“We are all really proud that Joe, Michael and Sam’s hard work has paid off and are excited to have three additional fully-qualified accountants within our team,” says Charlie. “To combine a career with studying takes a huge amount of dedication but I think they’d all agree that the experience they gain here on a daily basis has been helpful in their studies.”
She continues: “We are really proud of the experience we now have under our roof at Charter Tax and are looking forward to two more members of our team – Tom Maggs and Esther Akehurst – becoming qualified too in the not too distant future.”
