Charter Tax has merged with a specialist private client practice in London owned by Richard Hall. The two firms have particular expertise in international tax matters and saw a perfect fit with the two businesses.
“Richard and I have known each other for many years through our work in the field of international tax,” says Janet Pierce, Principal of Charter Tax. “We could both see the benefits to our clients, in particular, of merging our two firms together.”
Richard Hall says he met Janet when she joined the Association of Independent Expatriate Taxation Practitioners (AIETP) soon after launching Charter Tax.
“I was immediately struck by her broad range of technical knowledge and I and the AIETP have valued her as a member ever since,” he explains.
In the field of international private client tax work, Charter Tax focuses on clients coming to or going from the UK. Non-domiciliaries living in the UK are a key area of work and, ideally, the firm will work with such clients from the moment they contemplate coming to the UK until the moment they leave – and beyond.
“As I near retirement, I had for some time been considering the possibility of merging my business with another similar business, as a means of facilitating an orderly handover of my clients’ tax affairs to fellow tax professionals I knew were technically excellent and delivered a friendly and first rate service,” Richard Hall explains. “Charter Tax ticked all the boxes and it is very reassuring to know that, when I do retire, I will be leaving my clients in such good hands.”
Richard Hall set up his practice in 1996 and, before that, he worked for a number of large accountancy firms, including Coopers & Lybrand and Price Waterhouse – now PWC, and Deloitte Haskins & Sells, now Deloitte.
“Working in the expatriate divisions of big international accounting firms, expatriates were my core clients from day one,” Richard explains. “This experience gave me a strong foundation in advising expatriates, which I took into my own practice and have broadened since. My typical clients have been high income non-UK domiciled clients living and working in the UK.”
He explains that, since 2008, there have been various ongoing changes to the tax rules applying to non-UK domiciled individuals.
“As a consequence, it has been a particularly interesting, varied and rewarding time to be involved in this sector,” says Richard, who is joining the Charter Tax team as a consultant.
“We are delighted to welcome Richard to our team and excited to be working with his clients,” says Janet. “He shares the same dedication to offering clients the high level of expertise and service we do.”
Richard adds: “I have acted for the majority of my clients for many years, in some cases more than 20 years. Because of my clients’ loyalty and trust in me, I have felt a sense of responsibility to hand them over to a firm that shares those same values. Charter Tax meets the expectations I had set.”
