Joe Cleary has been with Charter Tax since October 2012 and qualified last summer which, he says, has given him ‘more responsibility’ over his workload.
Over the years, Charter Tax has gained a reputation for supporting team members working to become qualified accountants and Joe adds: “Now I’m qualified, I have more time and resources available and have been able to assist trainees.”
Joe works mainly in the corporate team, where he reviews and prepares VAT returns, as well as getting involved in the preparation of management accounts and statutory year-end accounts, the preparation of corporation tax returns, bookkeeping reviews and project work.
“I enjoy completing project work particularly, as it often requires a lot of analysis and I feel a great sense of achievement when the file is signed off,” he says.
Like the rest of the team, Joe has had to adapt to home-working during lockdown.
“Even though we’re not physically together, we have continued to work as a team,” he explains. “This is made easier through Microsoft teams, which can be used for calls, video calls and work schedules. We also have regular contact with managers to ensure deadlines are met.”
He adds that Covid-19 has affected many businesses in ways that ‘could not have been predicted’.
“It has been interesting assisting clients to find the best solutions to manage the effects of the pandemic on their businesses,” Joe explains. “We continue to keep up-to-date with the new releases from the government to ensure our clients are informed of the schemes and resources that are available to them.”
Joe joined Charter Tax after completing his A levels.
“I always wanted to work within business and, although I did consider going to University, I decided that route wasn’t for me,” he explains. “I then came across accountancy and, after further research, I discovered that it was common in the industry to learn and work at the same time, which was perfect for me.”
Outside of work, Joe enjoys sport, particularly golf and cycling. During lockdown, he continued road and mountain biking and, since golf courses are now open again, he’s been enjoying the chance to get back to that too.
