Sam Wing joined the Charter Tax team in February 2016, having completed his AAT qualification as part of an apprenticeship with another local accountancy firm, followed by 18 months travelling throughout Asia and Australia. A member of the corporate team, he qualified in 2019.
In his final year at school, Sam spent a lot of time researching what industry he’d like to go into.
“Accountancy offered plenty of opportunities for career progression and it was something that greatly interested me,” he explains. “My favourite part of the job is providing a good customer service for our clients and building up a good rapport with them too.”
Since qualifying last year, Sam says he has ‘started to step away from the day-to-day compliance work and have been concentrating more on a managerial role’.
He adds: “I have been managing colleagues that assist me with client work, and then reviewing the work and liaising with clients. The increased responsibilities of a managerial role has given my work a different dynamic and I am enjoying the change.”
These past few months though have brought unique challenges in the shape of Covid-19.
“We have had to change the way we hold client meetings since and have been using video conference calls instead,” Sam explains. “This has worked very well and, in some ways, has actually made client meetings easier to arrange during busy schedules.”
He continues: “We have also had to assist clients with the various financial support measures that the Government has put in place as a result of the pandemic, as well as providing advice to clients to help cashflow during these difficult times.”
Outside of work, Sam’s main interest is football, both playing and watching – when he can; he is an avid fan of Fulham Football Club. During lockdown he says that he didn’t discover any new hobbies as such.
“However, I used to be a keen runner and I re-ignited my interest in running,” Sam says. “I would also say that I was more experimental with cooking and trying out new dishes.”
