Client accountant Susie Weightman joined Charter Tax back in 2012 from another firm of accountants (where she worked in Rye and Bexhill). She was there for approximately nine years and, having completed her AAT qualification, and studying for her ACCA qualification she went on to qualify as a certified accountant in 2013.
Before this, Susie had worked at Pontins in Camber Sands, initially in the main restaurant as a waitress and then as a leisure bluecoat, entertaining children. After that she gained some early accountancy experience, working within the finance department.
As part of the corporate team at Charter Tax, her role mainly includes preparing year end accounts and corporation tax returns but she also helps review VAT returns and Non-Resident Landlord tax returns.
“My job also involves outsourced FD work and helping to assist junior staff,” adds Susie. “I enjoy having a varied workload.”
Over the years, Charter Tax has built a great reputation as somewhere really supportive to train and Susie enjoys working with trainees.
“I try my best to help more junior staff who are still training with any questions regarding their work and also, if I am available, I would carry out the initial review of a set of accounts or VAT return they have prepared, providing feedback,” she explains.
This supportive nature spreads across the whole firm, as Susie explains: “Everyone at Charter Tax is so lovely and welcoming. Whilst at work we are professional and work well as a team to meet deadlines but, outside of work, when we get together, we all have such a laugh. It makes the firm a lovely environment to work in.”
Accountancy wasn’t where Susie saw herself while at school.
“In my last year of school, I did work experience at a primary school,” she says. “I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, so I went to college and signed up to a two-year course studying for a BTEC National Diploma in computing. I enjoyed the website designing part of the course and came out with a distinction but, after that, I still wasn’t sure what direction to take.”
She adds: “I ended up continuing my education at college, where I started my AAT course and have continued with accountancy ever since.”
Outside of work, Susie enjoys spending time with her two young daughters and loves ‘fun, family days out’.
She adds: “On the odd occasion that I may have some child-free time, then I do love a bit of retail therapy and, of an evening, dinner out at a nice restaurant or a cocktail or two out with friends.”
