100 years old

The team at Charter Tax, like everyone else, has been inspired by the fundraising efforts of Captain Tom Moore in the run-up to his 100th birthday and recently made a donation to his fundraising page.

Captain Tom had set himself a target of walking 100 lengths of his back garden (ten lengths a day) to mark his special birthday, with the goal of raising £1000 for the NHS Charities' Covid-19 Urgent Appeal. An appearance on BBC Breakfast captured the hearts of the public and it wasn’t long until he reached his goal, becoming a ‘national treasure’ in the process. He has currently raised an incredible £27 million – but this is likely to be exceeded.

Captain Tom completed his final ten laps on Thursday 16 April, a feat which was broadcast live and he was described by the Duke of Cambridge as a ‘one-man fundraising machine’.

Born and brought up in Yorkshire, Captain Tom now lives with his daughter and her family in Bedfordshire. After leaving school, he completed an apprenticeship as a civil engineer, before enlisting at the beginning of the Second World War. In 1940, Captain Tom was selected for officer training and was later posted in India and then to Sumatra after the Japanese surrender. He returned to be an instructor at the Armoured Fighting Vehicle School in Bovington.

“Who could fail to be inspired by Captain Tom’s heroic fundraising efforts,” says Janet Pierce, Principal of Charter Tax. “During these challenging times, following his progress has been a wonderful way to lift all our spirits. Happy Birthday Captain Tom.”
